I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Kirby's death. I was a student in his very first Theater class at Plainedge and was either in or worked on plays with him from freshman to senior year. I just happened to be re-reading the story, Gift of the Magi, and thought of him. I wanted to look him up and tell him so. He set this beautiful short story to music and it was performed at Plainedge. I still remember the songs.
Mr. Kirby gave me confidence that I could perform, sing, and read poetry. I have thought of him many times over the years.
My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and to all the staff at Plainedge High who had the privilege of working with him all these years. He was a gift to so may students.
Sending healing thoughts,

To the Kirby family, my deepest sympathy on the passing of Mr. Kirby.
As I read the messages of condolence, I was taken by the fact that more than twenty five years after I graduated from Plainedge H.S., his students felt the same way that I did about him. How lucky we were to have such an amazing and talented teacher at Plainedge, and how blessed we were that he undertook the production of so many wonderful musicals with his students. While I am sad to know that Mr. Kirby has passed, I am grateful for having known him and for all the beautiful memories he made for us.

Mrs. Kirby and family,
Please accept my deepest condolences. I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Kirby. I am a graduate of Plainedge, class of 1970. Mr. Kirby was my humanities teacher and made a huge impression on me. I couldn't believe how he knew everyone's name the second of class! It sent the message loud and clear, we were each important to him. The next year, I watched him direct our senior play, Oklahoma. Eighteen years later he directed my youngest brother in his senior play. When one of the leads lost his voice, Mr. Kirby had to say his lines! This experience instilled a love of theater in my brother, Patrick. He is involved in writing, directing, producing and acting til this day. Finally and for me most importantly, I thank Mr. Kirby for making the scriptures come alive as a lector in my parish, St. Josephs.
Thank you, thank you Mr. Kirby for all you have shared with us through the years. You will be missed.

To borrow a phrase from Hamlet, "The play's the thing..." And through the years, for thousands of us, the play was the thing. It was an opportunity to do something most of us had never done before. We got up on stage in front of hundreds of people at a time. We sang, we danced, we recited our lines. The play allowed us to forge new friendships and solidify old ones. We were part of a team and boy did we have fun! When it was over, we had performed before a couple thousand people in total and proved to our parent, our friends, and most of all ourselves, that we could do it. And coordinating the whole production were two miracle workers, Gerry and Barbara Kirby. They were a great team. Mrs. Kirby's main job was costumes and dance. Mr. Kirby did everything else. He picked the play, coordinated auditions, taught lines and music and so many other things. Each year was a different play and a different production. How he did all of this, I don't know. What I do know is that words are woefully inadequate to express his impact on those of us who participated in the process. I was privileged to be in the audience for two plays (Kiss Me Kate and Mame), play in the orchestra pit for another (Promises, Promises) and act in yet another (Fiddler on the Roof). I also played in the pit for a Kirby Freeport Chorale production (Bells are Ringing) and took his class in drama. To put it mildly, I was and still am in awe of his talents and immensely appreciative of the opportunities he helped facilitate. While each play is unique, our Senior Play, Fiddler on the Roof, allowed us to explore humanity and its fears, joys and frustrations in a way that has remained with me more than 40 years later. Mr. Kirby gave me that and much more.
All the world's a stage and I am deeply grateful to have shared it with a soul named Gerald Kirby.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of the best teacher I ever had. Gerry was the biggest heart on two legs I ever saw. He touched lives. I don't think there was a single person he ever met that didn't feel special for having met him. I had him for Drama class and worked on plays with him. I still remember every speech he taught us. His bearing and manner was always professional and caring.
I remember going to Queens to see Gerry in a play with a group of kids from his drama class. We sat in the front row and tried like heck to make him break character, but he never did. Remarkably, he didn't get mad at us for doing that!
I don't know why Plainedge was so lucky as to have the benefit of his talents, he really was good enough to be on Broadway, but he chose to be there and he enriched so many students lives by his choice.
As an adult I have a friend who said she wanted to bring opera to the local elementary school. When asked why, she said, because how are they to know if they could grow up to be opera singers if they never saw an opera? The 1st play I ever saw was one of Gerry's productions. I still remember the chills I got when the curtain came up for the 1st time! He introduced culture to lives that had never had the experience of it before.
I'm sure there were times when his dedication must have made it hard to be in his
family, but I hope seeing the outpouring of love from all those whose lives he enriched makes up a little for those times. My sincere sympathy for your loss.
The moon moans mournfully... RIP Gerry

Mr. Kirby was my high school drama teacher and yearbook advisor at Plainedge High School (class of 96).
He was one of my favorite teachers and I have so many amazing memories because of him. I can still hear his voice saying "sparkle, effervesce, this is not amateur night in Hicksville" before every drama performance. And no one will ever match the way he described the emergency exits in the auditorium! I loved spending my Saturday mornings building scenery and sometimes he would buy slurped or pizza for everyone. Perhaps one of my favorite phrases of his was the way he concluded the morning announcements, "Thank you very much for your very kind attention!"
I am truly saddened by his passing and send my love to his family.
