Obituary

Our beloved, Susan Hughes, passed away peacefully on September 20th, 2023 following a brief illness. She was 69 years old. Susan was born in Bay Shore, NY on June 17, 1954 to Ruth Eleanor (Williams) Crosby and Robert Woodrow Williams. Susan lived her young life in Bay Shore alongside her two siblings, Judy and Bobby. Upon graduating from Bay Shore High School in 1972, she was accepted to the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing and became a Nurse in 1975. For 45 years, Susan worked at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, first spending time as head nurse of PICU/Peds. Upon starting her own family, she became a float nurse and had the opportunity to work on each specialized floor of the hospital. She spent the last 20 years of her career as an Administrative Supervisor on the night shift, ironically holding the same position as her mother years prior. Susan worked tirelessly on various projects and committees in an effort of improving morale and supporting staff. She retired in June, 2019. Susan is survived by her husband John Richard Hughes. They married August 27, 1983 and recently celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary. In addition, Susan is survived by her two children, Laurie and Katelyn and puppies Millie and Izzy. She is well loved by her siblings, siblings-in-law and nieces and nephews. Susan often said her greatest accomplishment was raising kind and successful children. She also often said it was easier to run an entire hospital then raise two children.

Sue had many passions in life but her genuine love for art ran deep. She developed a love for sewing, quilting and knitting in high school. This continued into her adult life and she fostered a love for fabric, color and painting. Sue will forever be remembered by her love of margaritas, her wit and sass, her red VW beetles but more importantly for her generosity and sincere kindness. Services will be held Thursday, September 28th from 3-5 and 7-9 at Chapey & Son’s Funeral Home in West Islip, NY with a Funeral Mass, Friday, September 29th at 11am at St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Shore.
