Obituary of John Wayne Smatlak

John Wayne Smatlak, born April 4, 1954 in Bay Shore, New York, moved onto glory with our Lord Jesus Christ on February 2, 2017, from complications of multiple myeloma. He was surrounded by loved ones as he died peacefully at Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island. John's life was a celebration of music. He studied classical piano beginning early in life through private lessons on Long Island and continuing through our years in Fort Worth, TX. Later he studied music at North Texas State University in Denton, TX. He enjoyed playing the trumpet in the marching band at Western Hills High School. He played the keyboard and traveled throughout the United States with the pop band, Mist. He entertained family and friends with his amazing musical abilities. For many years he lead song and played the organ for weekly masses at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Bay Shore, New York. Memories of his music, kind heart and gentle spirit will be with us always. He is preceded in death by his father Edward Joseph Smatlak. Survived by his mother Irene Smatlak, his sisters Victoria Anne Tuttle, Lauretta Jean Tellor, Concordia Ruth van Hoesel, and his brother Joseph Mark Smatlak. Please join us in celebration of his life with family and friends as services will be held at Chapey Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation.
