Obituary

James Francis Screeney, 87, of Bay Shore, New York passed away peacefully on September 6, 2023. James was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1936. He grew up with two sisters, Joan and Martha, who adored their big brother. James was very proud of the borough of his birth. He knew every street, avenue and shortcut from his days as a delivery boy for “The Brooklyn Eagle”. James met the love of his life, Rochelle Vetri Screeney, in Brooklyn. They were married on September 17, 1960. They lived in a studio apartment in Bay Ridge and eventually packed up their car, and daughter, when they purchased their dream home in Bay Shore, where they raised their daughters, Laura, Linda, Barbara. James was very proud of his three grandchildren, Michael (Derry), Zachary (Harris) and Elizabeth (Harris), He treasured his time with the grandkids and loved being called “Papa”. He was also a pet grandparent to Donut and Dunkin. Everyone who knew James (Mr. DMV) knew how much he loved cars and the automotive/transportation industry. His favorite opening line was “how are things and what’s the mileage on your car?” Whether you called him James, Jim, Jimmy, Buddy, Charlie or Mr. Screeney, I am sure you all have funny stories to share as there is nothing that James liked better than a good story with a good punchline.
