Obituary

Egner, Dr. John, of West Islip, NY, on August 24, 2023. Born in NYC on December 15, 1928 as the eldest son of German immigrants, Anton and Theresa Egner, John was the example of a true American success story. John then spent the early years of his life living over in Bavaria, Germany and then returned to America just before World War II. From that point on John learned the value of hard work, of faith in God and in the love of family as he grew up in Harporsfield, NY. After high school he enrolled in the United States Army and served for two consecutive years in Korea at the end of WW2. From there he spent the next four years at Hamilton College, thanks to the GI bill, where he majored in pre-Med in preparation for the 4 years he was to attend Medical school at Syracuse University. In his urology residency at Meadowbrook Hospital he met a fiery redheaded nurse that was going to become the love of his life and the mother to his six children. For over 50 years of marriage they created a life of excitement, memories, adventure, faith and love of our Lord. He practiced medicine in Private practice for over 40 years, loving every minute of it. He was a pillar in the medical community, a mentor to many, and an example of a true talent in the Operating Room. He was proud of his accomplishments and rightfully so. He even ran for Suffolk County legislator representing the Conservative Party. After John retired from medicine at the age of 74 he filled his days with family, chess, traditions, travel, Yankee games, more travel with family and more chess.

.

His passing on 8/24/2023, at the age of 94, mirrored his life…surrounded by the family he helped create with Teash, in the home that he loved and lived in for over 50 years. He is survived by his 6 children; Susan, John, Jim, Heidi, Kristi and Katie, 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren ( and a 4th on the way) “ Life is a great big canvas; throw all the paint you can on it."

.

Reposing at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Hwy. (1/4 mile west of the Robert Moses Cswy.). Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial Wednesday 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church, West Islip, LI. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Babylon, NY.
