Obituary

ROBERT LYNN COX With sadness we announce the passing of Robert Lynn Cox as a result of a sudden cardiac event on Friday, July 7. He was greeted in heaven by his wife of over 68 years, Gwyneth, who predeceased him in 2019. He is survived by his four children, Robert (Joan), Pam (Jim) McLott, Cheryl (Mark) Valente and Tim (Eileen), 12 grandchildren and 13 great -grandchildren. A native of Montclair New Jersey where he was born in 1925. He served in the US Army before attending Colgate University. He went on to graduate from Springfield College where he was a Little All American tight-end while obtaining a degree in Physical Education. He later continued his education there and obtained his PhD. After stops in Cape Cod, Parkchester and Mahopac he settled the family in Brightwaters where he resided for over 60 years. As an educator and a coach, he had an illustrious career at Babylon High School where he coached football, wrestling and basketball. He was inducted into the Babylon High School Hall of Fame. From there he moved on to John Glenn High School where he coached and then served as Director of Athletics. He was inducted to the Elwood Athletic Hall of Fame. He finished his career coaching with his son, Tim, at Bay Shore High School. After retiring he served as Mayor of the Village of Brightwaters for several years. He was proud to be a founding member of the Bay Shore Y.M.C.A. His joy in life was his family who filled his heart and brought a sparkle to his eyes.
