Obituary

Hon. Salvatore A. Alamia, 81, passed away in Islip, New York on May 16, 2023. Salvatore, better known as Sal, was born on July 31, 1941 to Andrea and Concetta Alamia in Brooklyn, New York. He attended P.S. 174 during his early years, switched to St. Malachy’s R.C. K-8 School, and then La Salle Academy (Manhattan lower east side). He continued his education at Manhattan College and obtained an electrical engineering degree. Shortly after graduation, he decided to pursue a law degree and enrolled in NYU School of Law. He attended law school at night while working a full-time job and supporting a newly formed family at home. Sal leaves behind his wife of almost 50 years, Susan, 6 children (Andrew [Julie], Connie [Chuck Schreiner], Sally [Scott Baker], Robin [Raymond Stein], Samantha [John Gilson] and Jacquelyn [James Scoma]), and 12 grandchildren (Skyler, Jason, Emma, Nicholas, Alyssa, Jessica, Kayla, Ava, Autumn, Johnny, Matthew and Benjamin). Sal has now been reunited with his parents and siblings, Roseann and Ignazio.

.

Sal led a very successful career. He was a former Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney from 1972-1979 and a former Chief of the Frauds Bureau, spent over 13 years in private practice at the Law Office of Salvatore A. Alamia (formerly Rohl & Alamia), became a Fifth District Court Judge (Town of Islip) in 1993 and Acting County Court Judge overseeing the Drug Court, and an adjunct professor of Touro Law School. He was also an active member of the Columbian Lawyers Association, Suffolk County Bar Association, Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association, and other legal organizations. Sal also served as a Board Member of La Salle Academy (Manhattan) and President of the Garden City Ski Club. It was extremely important to Sal to live life to the fullest. He travelled all over the world (and left behind 73 photo albums documenting his trips), skied until he was 80, played golf several times a week, went trap shooting regularly, painted for many years, flew a glider plane, decided to learn how to ride a motorcycle in his 50’s (surprising his family when it showed up in the driveway one day) and attended many Broadway shows, operas and ballets. Sal also made sure to have regular breakfast and lunch “meetings” with the ROMEO Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out). And it goes without saying how much he loved spending time with this family. Sal adored his family and was very proud of every one of them. Although his physical being is gone, the countless memories he created, the stories he shared, the one-liners he used, and the popular Sal-isms will live on.

.

The wake will be held at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in East Islip on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 pm and on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 3:00-5:00 pm and 7:00-9:30 pm. Service will be held at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 12:15 pm and will continue at St. Charles Cemetery, 2015 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Sal’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
