Obituary

Margaret Mary (Peg, Peggy) Hannon – an unassuming, kind, generous person and devout follower of Jesus Christ, who made an impact on the lives of so many people, died on January 11th. She lived an exceptional life in all the ways that matter, marked by service to God, to her family, to her friends, and to those in need who she encountered on her life’s journey. She was a reflection of God's love to everyone who knew her. Peggy was born on April 13, 1939 in Brooklyn NY to Catherine and John Sexton. She was one of six siblings; she deeply loved and remained close to her sister and brothers and their spouses throughout their lives. Their bonds were strong and get togethers were joyful occasions marked by laughter, love and caring. They grew up in Brooklyn as members of St. Theresa’s parish with her Cunnane cousins and extended family whom she cherished all of her life. Peggy met John Hannon when they were both working at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Smith. They married in 1961 and had six children, four of whom survive her. In 1965 John and Peggy made the move of so many young families of that time out to the suburbs, in their case to Massapequa Long Island where they resided for more than 40 years and raised their family. The Hannon’s were members of Maria Regina Parish, including sending all six children to Maria Regina Grammar School. Peggy loved the many lifelong friends she made in Massapequa. Peggy lived the last 15 years of her life at the Commons in Deer Park, and enjoyed the community of people she met there.

.

Peggy and John suffered every parent’s worst nightmare when their daughters Nancy and Kimberly were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Peggy turned her pain into a renewed commitment to Jesus and began the spiritual journey that would define the rest of her life. Peggy’s faith only deepened through the loss of her daughters and her own series of illnesses and physical challenges. Peggy is survived by her children John (Laura), Cathy (Kevin), Brian (Jean), Mary (John), her 13 grandchildren whom she adored and was immensely proud: Brian, Jack, Erin, Kate, Robert, Nancy, Bridget, Jack, Theo, Sean, Luke, Megan and William, her sisters-in-law Barbara, Eileen, Maureen, Geraldine and Joan and brother-in-law John. She is survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved and enjoyed spending time with as often as possible. She is also survived by numerous friends from all phases of her life, who found a willing listener and strong person to share the joys and burdens of life and with whom she shared her grace and wisdom. She was pre-deceased by her husband John, her daughters Nancy and Kimberly, her parents, her in-laws Kathryn and John Hannon, her siblings Jack, Jim, Richie, Michael and Kathy, her brothers-in-law Bill and Jerry and her niece Deidre. Her funeral service will be held at Bread of Life Church in Wyandanch NY where Sister Peggy was a member of the congregation for close to 40 years. Bread of Life was like a second family to her and she was grateful to have found such a wonderful community of people to share her spiritual journey.
