Obituary

Albert J. Smith “AJ” passed away unexpectedly on 11/14/22. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends. He was born 11/16/53 to Albert Adam Smith and Margaret Angel Kunz Smith. He grew up in Seaford, NY, with his younger sister Barbara. He enjoyed playing football, wrestling, lacrosse and shooting BB guns in Tackapausha park. He graduated Seaford High School in 1971 where he was the captain of the football and wrestling teams - go Vikings! He attended Central Connecticut State College where he played football before returning to Long Island. AJ spent 42 years working for the Town of Hempstead in various roles. He worked his way up to Executive Vice President of the CSEA local 880 union office. He also worked a second job for 30+ years officiating high school soccer, lacrosse, and football where his crew made it to the long island championship several times. He was a blue collar / manual labor guy and proud of it. He liked the line “I get paid to work out.” He enjoyed coaching and watching his children play sports. He attended every game he could and drove many hours to do so. He bought “a piece of the rock” – 100 acres in Russell, NY. He liked to ride quads, shoot targets, cook smores, hike and build campfires while on vacation there. He loved playing with his 9 grandchildren and was a great babysitter. He always liked hosting big family get togethers that involved swimming in the pool and barbequing. He changed his own oil, fixed his own deck, installed his own fences, and mowed his own lawn even up until the day before he died. He was the first one to offer to help you move furniture. He was the life of the party, enjoyed making people happy and engaging them in animated political discourse.

.

He was a loving husband, father and grandpa who was always ready, willing, and able to protect his family. He led by example and instilled a great work ethic in all his children which has led to their success today. He was blessed to have been married to his beautiful and loving wife Debbie for 42 years. He is survived by his wife Debbie Smith; his 6 children Luke, Brian (Malissa), Colleen (Andrew), Marc (Thatiany), Eric (Alicia), Shawn (Elisa); his 9 grandchildren Juliana, Jillian and Anabella Fodor, Brian Jr. and Vienna Smith, Leo and Luca Smith, Neli and Cloe Smith; his sister Barbara DeLeon.
