Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Alan Smith (Brentwood, NY), born on May 24, 1953, in Manhattan, New York. He passed away surrounded with an abundance of love and family on November 12, 2021, at the age of 68. Doug was a hardworking man. Growing up to be printer like his father before him, then deciding to follow his dreams to become a baseball umpire, then later to fulfill his passion of law enforcement by becoming an armed guard – proved to all around him that you can always reinvent yourself. You can always follow your dreams. Another passion Doug had was within youth sports. Doug coached baseball in their town of Brentwood and changed the lives of countless people. Even after all of this, Doug was so much more than what his career path describes. His most important role in life was a that of a family man. Doug adored his best friend and wife of 40 years Lori. Together they created a happy life filled with travel, adventures, shows and sporting events with their children to name a few. Doug’s spontaneous nature and zest for travel led him to exploring this country he called “amazing and beautiful”. Some of his most favorite and long-lasting memories were trips taken, sites seen, and the individuals he shared that time with.

.

Although Doug had already established himself in the role of a family man, that didn’t even hold a candle to how he would be as a grandfather. Doug was meant to be a Grampy, and the best Grampy he was. As a kid at heart, he shared his passion of joy and laughter with his grandchildren. From endless Nerf gun and pillow fights to hours at the arcade and everything in between, he was the epitome of what a perfect grandfather should be. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 40 years; Lorraine; children: Christopher (Jacquelyn), Jennifer (Matthew), Danielle (Jerry), and Rayanna; grandchildren: Matthew, Kailey, Jaxon, Clyde, Brayden, and Nash; Mother: Regina; Siblings: Scott (Julie), Donna Lyn, Diane (Donald), and Darren (Mary); as well as countless relatives, and friends. The family welcomes you to pay respects to such an amazing man on Thursday November 18, 2021, from 3:00pm – 5:00pm and 7:00pm – 9:00pm at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home on 1225 Montauk Hwy West Islip, NY 11795. Followed by a memorial service on Friday November 19, 2021, at 11:00am at Westminster United Presbyterian Church, 109 Udall Rd. West Islip, NY 11795. In lieu of flowers, he would have been honored to have donations made in his name to the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, West Islip, New York’s “Steeple Fund”.
