Obituary

Michael Gerard Mebert, age 71, died peacefully on October 14, 2021. He was a graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Barbara and Franklin Mebert; his older brother, John; and his younger sister, Gerianne. Mike was a proud Teamster and union member until his retirement as a route salesman for Entenmann’s Bakery in 2015. Those who knew Mike will remember his wry gallows humor and bright smile. He was generous, kind, and introspective. He lived at Atria Huntington and enjoyed the company and care of its employees and residents. His greatest accomplishment was as a father. To ensure that his family was well provided for, he often worked six days a week to fund family vacations, music lessons, Sweet 16 parties, and day trips, documenting even the most minute details with his camera and camcorder. Despite working 60+ hour weeks, he never missed a band concert, softball game, or marching band parade. He was a lifelong fan of Clint Eastwood and enjoyed watching movies and late night TV Mike is survived by his former wife, Nancy; older daughter Danielle and son-in-law Paul Ercolano; his younger daughter, Ashley; and his “brother from another mother,” Ralph Oliva. Visitation will take place at Frederick J. Chapey and Sons Funeral Home in Bethpage on Sunday, October 17th from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral and cremation services will be private for immediate family and invited guests only. In lieu of flowers, his daughters ask that you make a donation in their dad’s name to either St. Jude Children’s Hospital or South Oaks Hospital (please specify that your gift supports Comprehensive Outpatient Behavioral Services).
