Obituary of Miriam Helena Hilly

Hilly, Miriam Helena, who lived in Jensen Beach,  Florida died on January 18 at the age of 90. Miriam was an only child born in Sunnyside, New York to Hugh Joseph (Joe) and Mae Flatley. Mrs. Hilly attended St. Jean's High School in Manhattan and later earned her B.A. in Recreational Therapy from St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, New York. Mrs. Hilly worked for more than ten years as a Detective at Macy's in Herald Square, Roosevelt Field and Bay Shore and later became a Realtor in Suffolk County. After graduating from St. Joseph's , she worked as a Recreational Therapist for the elderly. Miriam was a life-long lover of books, an avid reader of history, biographies, fiction and non-fiction. Her favorite gift to give anyone for any occasion, was a new best-selling book, which she made sure to read before giving away! Her favorite pastime was laying on the couch and reading a good book or the New York Times. Mrs. Hilly lived in Jensen Beach for more than 30 years. She was a member of a book club and a finance club, and occasionally played golf.  During the years she lived on Hutchinson Island, she devoted time and energy to become an accomplished bridge player. She was a reliable and regular bridge partner at various clubs in Stuart. Mrs. Hilly was married to Vincent Paul Hilly for more than 53 years. They had five children. She is survived by Vincent P. Hilly, Jr. and his wife Joyce, Maryellen and her husband Dean A. Stiffle, Kevin C. Hilly, and James M. Hilly and his wife Nancy. Mrs. Hilly had 8 surviving grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Hugh R. Hilly and her grandson Douglas P. Hilly. A  Memorial Visitation will be held at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Hwy. (1/4 mile west of the Robert Moses Cswy.). on Thursday, January 25 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial, Friday January 26 at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church at 11:15 AM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to: Treasure Coast Hospice or Visiting Nurse Association of Florida.
