Obituary of Dominick A. Sampogna, MD

Sampogna - Dominick A., MD, (Dr.Sam) of Brightwaters, formerly of Great River, LI passed away peacefully on January 15, 2018. A longtime surgeon in Bay Shore and Patchogue, LI.

Dominick was born in Guardiaregia, Italy 02/15/1939. He immigrated to the United States with his parents. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1960 and received his Medical Education at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Sam pursued his specialty training in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at the Boston University medical Center. While conducting his practice on Long Island, he also managed to make time traveling to the VA Hospital to mentor and teach future Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons. He was Chief of the Otolaryngology Department at Southside and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. Dr. Sam was a Senior Attending at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was Chief of Plastic Surgery and Associate Director of Surgery at Southside Hospital. After retirement in 2015, he held an Emeritus statue at Southside, his primary hospital. He was in the Air Force Reserve from 1966 with honorable discharge in 1972. Golfing was his sport of choice traveling around the world with his golf buddies and his precious love Diane. Dominick has been an inspirational leader. His spirit for cooking, gardening, tending to his figs trees and orchard lives on.

Dominick precedes his death by his parents Peter and Mary Sampogna and his beloved Aunt Lucy. He is survived by his loving wife Diane and loving children, Christina (Chuck), Marianne (Bob), Peter (Cheri) and Ashley (John). He leaves behind a loving Brother Mike (Linda), and loving Sister Rose Marie (Steve), Cousin Nick (Adele) and Cousin Anthony (Joanne). Most of his family emigrated from Italy to Canada where he leaves behind his cherished Canadian family.

Dominick and Diane have 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dominick leaves behind a legacy with his family, patients, friends and all who knew and loved him. Dominick was a deeply feeling human being who went out of his way to help others without forethought. He had a special way with patients and a gift for focusing in on their problems. His unique skill, compassion and life force will be unseen, unheard but always near.

Reposing at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons East Islip Funeral Home, 200 East Main Street (1/2 mile west of the S.S. Parkway, Exit 45W). Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip, LI on Friday at 9:45 AM. Entombment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn, LI. Visiting Wednesday and Thursday 2:00 PM until 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM until 9:30 PM.
