I used to work in the downtown financial district and Brian and I would see each other during lunch time. Brian was working for AON Insurance on the 92nd floor of the South Tower of the Twin Towers. He showed up for work on the morning of Monday, September 11, 2001. He was at his desk when terrorists few a Jet Liner into the North Tower. Brian was responsible for evacuating AON employees in case of the emergencies, but the authorities said that everything was OK, and they should go back to work.
Fifteen minutes later a second jet liner crashed into the 96th floor of the South Tower. Brian described to me how the build shook and smell of the Jet fuel pouring down through the building. Brian evacuated the staff down the stair cases from the 92nd floor. Brian went back to check all the conference rooms to make sure everyone had evacuated. While heading to the staircase, the NYFD came up the Service Elevator and offered him a ride down which he took.
After existing the burning Twin Towers, Brian waited across the street for his fellow employees to come down the staircases. Then both Towers started to collapse, Brian ran for cover and was buried in two feet of ashes. He had the will to live and dig himself out, saw the Golden Arches through smoke escaped into a MacDonald's for safety.
A 176 of those AON employees that went down into the South Tower staircases on that day died. Brian returned to work at AON, but told me that it was very difficult for him, with all of the pictures of his former colleagues that perished hanging in the office.
9/11 affected a lot of people in different ways. God Bless Brian.
