Obituary

Estelle Kaczanowski, lifelong resident of West Islip, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at the amazing age of 104. Estelle was born on August 11, 1919 in the house on Hawley Avenue where she would live for her entire life. Graduating from Babylon High School in 1937 she studied nursing at St. Catherine's Hospital in Greenport, Brooklyn. Upon graduating in 1940 she went to work as a nurse at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. At the height of World War II Estelle joined the U.S. Army as a nurse and served until her discharge in 1947, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Following her discharge Estelle returned to working at Southside Hospital in the labor and delivery department. In 1959 she was hired by the just opened Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. Her job was to open the newly created Pediatric Unit. Estelle would continue to serve in that unit until her retirement in 1981. Reposing at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Hwy. Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial Friday 10:30 AM at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Babylon, NY. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Babylon, NY. Visiting Thursday 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
