Obituary

Janet Zenk, Pioneering Nurse Practitioner Janet Zenk (nee Scherr) passed away peacefully at her home in West Islip, NY, on December 14, 2022. Born in 1926 to Walter and Helen Scherr of Queens, NY, Janet was an excellent student who attended nursing school and later the US Nurse Cadet Corps where she graduated shortly after WWII. In 1948 she married Martin Zenk, a chemical engineer, and the couple eventually moved to West Islip where they raised 5 children together. Initially, Janet took a part-time nursing position at Good Samaritan Hospital to keep her skills up to date; she went on to earn Bachelor and Master’s degrees. As one of the first graduates of Stony Brook’s Nurse Practitioner program, Janet worked at the North Shore VA Hospital and on faculty at Stony Brook, where she taught courses in the newly established Nurse Practitioner program. Janet enjoyed a long and distinguished career in nursing, maintaining her lifelong love for learning well beyond retirement, and serving as a trusted medical advisor to family and neighbors on countless occasions. Janet’s gravitation to health care as a career was emblematic of her profound empathy and compassion for her fellow humans. As a woman of deep faith and a positive outlook, she had many friends and interests and lived a very full life, and she will be sorely missed by those whose lives she touched. Janet was predeceased in 1995 by her husband, Martin, and leaves behind her sister, Helen Fraser of Bonita Springs, Florida; her children Martin, Diana Finnerty (Dennis), Jennifer McManus (George), Carolyn, and Gregory (Margaret); her grandchildren Sean and Elise Finnerty, Pearse (Anastasia) and Bryan McManus, and Dylan, Lindsey, and Heather Zenk; and one great-grandchild, Alana McManus. Janet is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and many cherished friends and neighbors.
