Obituary

Imelda M. “Emily” Fernandez, of Bay Shore, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 19, 2022, at the age of 77 following a period of declining health, surrounded by her husband and children. Imelda was born in Santa Cruz, Manila, Philippines on November 8, 1944, the eldest of four children born to Jose T. Mirador and Susana L. Manzano. She was a graduate of Far Eastern University in the Philippines with a Bachelor’s of Science in Medical Technology in 1966. She moved to the United States and worked as an intern at Good Samaritan Hospital for one year. After completing her internship, she transferred to Southside Hospital where she worked for 40 years as a Medical Technologist. On November 23, 1969, she married Antonio, an electrical engineer and ‘phone-pal’ for 6 months before they finally met on December 25, 1967. Soon after, they made their journey from the Philippines to the United States where they started a family and have resided ever since 1970. Imelda was a devoted mother and grandmother. She had a resolute personality with an infectious laugh. She was so generous, loving, and kind. She had a passion for traveling and a knack for shopping discounts. On her spare time you could find her playing bingo, holding the dobber and squeezing a stuffed toy to make duck sounds at the number 44.

.

Imelda is survived by her husband of 52 years, Antonio Vasquez Fernandez; her sons, Anthony and wife Dana, Allan and wife, Ruby, and daughters Imeliza and wife, Toria, and Imelyn and husband, David; grandchildren, Faith, Ana, Jack, Chase, Luca, Kiera, Colton, Dane, Stash, and Oliver. Being such a strong and influential presence, she will be greatly missed by her family. Imelda will be laid to rest on Tuesday August 23, 2022, at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, 2030 Wellwood Avenue in Farmingdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation through the online website pkdcure.org. Fredrick J. Chapey & Son’s Funeral Home and Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
