Frank Sammon, passed into the arms of God at home and in the arms of his beloved Cathy on Friday, April 22, 2022. Frank embraced life with great joy and reveled in the simple things: time with family and friends, his faith and his parish, the quiet solitude of nature from the back deck. He was never more content than when surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at family gatherings. While he did love to travel and see new places, family was of utmost importance to him, and he loved deeply and without reservation. Frank’s lengthy career in Quality Engineering started in the aerospace industry, and he worked for Grumman Aerospace, the US Navy, several smaller aerospace suppliers, New York City Transit Authority, and even did consulting work for six years after his formal retirement in 2004. He just wanted to see every project through to completion. Some of his prouder moments were working on the Lunar Module project, and the Experimental X-29 forward swept wing aircraft and helping to plan and rebuild NY City’s transit system infrastructure. Frank purchased his first Studebaker from a dealer in Valley Stream in 1964, and that began a lifelong love affair with cars and Studebaker’s particularly. His prized cars were a 1958 Scotsman and a 1963 Lark. He was very active in the Long Island Chapter of the Studebaker Driver’s Club, and over the years served as President, Vice President, and Treasurer.

Though challenged with many serious medical issues, Frank’s spirit rarely wavered. Time and again he beat the odds and came back stronger for it. He celebrated his 90th birthday just a month ago with nearly 100 people in attendance – a testament to his great circle of family and friends. He often remarked, to the astonishment of many, “I’ve had a charmed life.” Frank’s great gift was the ability to make people feel welcomed and loved, and to make them laugh, and he did so even up to his last visitors. He left a lasting impression on all those he met and was universally admired and loved. His infections spirit, great laugh, and zest for life will be sorely missed. Frank is survived by Cathy, sons Cornelius, Edward (Susan), Frank Jr. (Sheila), and Glenn, and brother Robert (Eileen) and sister-in-law Alison. He is predeceased by parents Cornelius J. and Marion Sammon and brother Kevin. He is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer, Eddie, Colleen, Dan, Christina, Frank III, Savonna, Amanda, Brian and Nicole and great grandchildren Celina, Jayna, Kateleen, Samantha, Elliott, Arsati, Leyla, Vincent, Katelynn, Michael, Juliana, Alexandra, Kylie, Oliver, and Tyler.
