Obituary

Donna Theresa Ryan, long time Babylon Village resident died August 20th, 2020 in New York City. A loving wife, devoted mother of 5, and Grammy of 12, Donna is survived by her children, John F. Ryan (Constance) of Brooklyn, NY; Kathleen J. Ryan (Maxwell) of New York, NY; Timothy V. Ryan (Tina) of Sydney, Australia; Michael E. Ryan (Regina) of Brooklyn, NY; her grandchildren; Sarah, Amelia, Liza, Luke, Sophie, Aidan, Lucie, Lachlan, Vincent, Mia, Anna, and Etta; and proceeded by her husband of 59 years Vincent J. Ryan, and son Matthew J. Ryan (Nona) of Goshen, NY. Born Donna Theresa Rummel on September 5, 1929 in Chicago, Il; the youngest child of Harry and Kathleen Rummel’s (nee McManaman) three children, and their only daughter. Donna lost her father when she was only 3, and was raised by her mother, Kay, a single-mother, and independent business owner- a rarity in the 1930s, with the help of many loving relatives both in Hawarden, and nearby Fort Dodge, Iowa. Donna moved to New York City after graduating High School, taking a job with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Not long after, Donna met her late husband, Vincent J. Ryan, a young attorney. They were married on June 28th, 1952 at Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. After a post nuptial holiday in Duluth, the young Mr. and Mrs. Ryan returned to NYC to start a family, eventually settling in Vincent’s childhood home of Babylon, NY.

.

Raising their family in Babylon Village, on Oak Street, and later Trask Lane, Donna was active in the community, at Babylon village schools when her children were young, and later with the local election board. An active member of Saint Joseph’s Church for over 60 years, an avid gardener, and an enthusiastic tennis player, Donna could often be found in her yard or on the local court when not driving as a volunteer for F.I.S.H., volunteering with the Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital, or working at the Good Samaritan Thrift Shop. Sharp as a tack, Donna’s wit is legendary, along with the kindness she showed to others. Revered by her children, and grandchildren whom she adored, Donna will live on in those who were lucky enough to know her. A private visitation will be held 8:30 am - 10:00 am Thursday, August 27, 2020 for family at Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip, NY. Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial, Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 10:30 am St. Joseph's RC Church, Babylon, LI. Interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Babylon, LI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donna’s name to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation (https://goodsamaritan.chsli.org/how-give-good-samaritan-hospital-foundation).
